    This #PrideMonth , we celebrate Gladys Bentley, a This #PrideMonth , we celebrate Gladys Bentley, a lesbian African American musician and innovator during the Harlem Rennaissance. 🎹

She began working as a singer and pianist in the Mad House club in the early 1920s, but soon began headlining in clubs all across New York, where she performed in her signature tuxedo and top-hat and openly flirted with women in the audience. After signing onto OKeh Records, she went on to perform in clubs all over the nation and inspired characters in several books.

    #OnThisDay in 1879, Lois Weber, the first American #OnThisDay in 1879, Lois Weber, the first American woman to ever direct a feature film, was born 🎉. Weber brought over 135 films to life, bravely depicting varied controversial topics such as poverty, abortion, and capital punishment. Some of her films were box-office hits, others were censored or banned making them extremely hard to recover to this day. A mentor, educator, and advocate in her later life, Weber received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to commemorate her trailblazing work in the film industry 🎥.

    #OnThisDay 1912: Tye Leung Schulze cast her first #OnThisDay 1912: Tye Leung Schulze cast her first vote. She was the first Chinese American woman to vote. In our short on her life, we spoke with her grandson Theodore Schulze and Tok Serita, the first Japanese American judge in New York State.
